The programme was more than would appear from the mere list of what was played. The Elgar, Hindemith, Stravinsky and Walton items were conducted by their composers. The Barber song was sung by Samuel Barber in person. Others, such as the Bridge were conducted by composers (Britten in this case) other than the composers of the works. The Mascagni was of special interest in that the music was preceded by a short speech by Mascagni himself.
