We begin on October 17th with a clarinet and piano recital at St. Peter‘s, Burnley by William Stafford and Hiroaki Takenouchi. Do you recognize the latter name? He appeared in November 2006 alongside violinist Cerys Jones. We look forward to hearing him again.

The delectable instrumental grouping of viola, flute and harp can be heard in the more intimate surroundings of Christ Church, Nelson, on November 28th when Trio Fauve will present a programme using these instruments in various combinations. The wonderful sonata by Debussy is the final item on this wide-ranging programme which begins with music by C.P.E. Bach.

Having heard several enthusiastic accounts of a brilliant young violinist called Martyn Jackson we decided that we must hear him at one of our concerts and we‘ve booked him, along with pianist Mikhail Shilyaev, for February 27th. Last November we heard the César Franck sonata in the composer‘s cello-and-piano version; we can now hear the violin-and-piano original. Note also that Martyn will begin with Bach‘s D minor Partita for unaccompanied violin. There‘s nowhere to hide in this music and the five movements end with the famous Chaconne, said to be one of the most demanding works in the violin‘s repertoire. Definitely not to be missed!

To end the season on April 17th we have the Heath String Quartet whose programme includes, between the Beethoven and Mendelssohn, one of the quartets by Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu who died 50 years ago. This anniversary is (understandably) being overshadowed by those of Purcell, Handel and Haydn so it‘s good that the Heath Quartet will commemorate him.
