I can't remember what the first item on this programme was, but it would have been something well-known; perhaps an overture. From the committee emerged the idea that the first programme of the season should be a popular one to give encouragement to newcomers to the society who might be put off by our more abstruse offerings. It had also been suggested that the chairman should start the season. Both these notions were adhered to for only a couple of years.
