Trios such as Trio Vivo (below, left) consisting of Karen Auty (violin), Melissa Edwards ('cello) and Clare Clements (piano) also make frequent appearances. In the middle are the members of the Rossetti Trio: Philippa Jeffery (violin), Nicholas Trygstad ('cello) and Alice Turner (piano). When we say "trio" it's usually hardly necessary to specify piano trio. There's so much repertoire for that combination that others seldom get a mention. However, the Stewart Death Trio shown on the right is more unusual, comprising Stewart Death (piano), Carolyn Hargreaves (soprano) and Andrew Long (violin).

Now and again we book an unusual instrumental group and such was the Gonzaga Band who entertained us at St.Thomas's Church, Barrowford, in April 2002. Sackbuts, cornetts, bagpipes and a harpsichord (in various combinations) made some unusual sounds in a presentation called "Music of the Tudor Courts". The players told the audience about the instruments and the music at every stage.
