Programme of Concerts
Season 19 (2014-2015)

Greetings from Burnley and Pendle Music Society! We hope you‘ve had an enjoyable summer and now, as the days get shorter, are looking forward to the pleasures of concert-going. We have a very varied series of concerts for you, including the obligatory solo piano recital by the brilliant young pianist Ryan Drucker. Look him up on You Tube to see and hear him play Liszt‘s Rigoletto Paraphrase which he also includes in his recital for the Society. If you weren‘t able to get to Concert Royal‘s "Music from Handel‘s London" a couple of seasons ago you missed a real treat, but they are making a return visit offering "Jane Austen‘s Musical England". This concert will take place at Higherford Methodist Church. Some of you may remember that we have held a concert there once before; with the Dante String Quartet in 2003. The church only holds about 100 and should make an ideal, intimate venue for an ensemble comprising soprano, flute, cello and harpsichord. And speaking of the flute, the season begins with a recital for the unusual combination of flute and piano; a first for this society. No string quartet this season (although we hope to remedy the omission in 2015-16). Instead we have the Solarek Piano Trio in an all-Russian programme. You may remember them too from a long way back; February 1998 to be precise. The cellist and pianist are different players now but Marina Solarek still leads from the violin desk.

Jane Austen's Musical England
Jane Austen (1774-1817) was a keen amateur musician with a large collection of music. The programme includes songs and instrumental music by J. C. Bach, Handel, Arne and other contemporary English composers. The items are drawn from Jane's collection and from contemporary sources. Brief extracts from letters and novels provide a fascinating glimpse into Jane Austen's musical world.
